GEOGRAPHY

Overview

Jamaica is a mountainous island in the Caribbean that lies in the continent of North America. The country is divided into three counties – Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey, which are then subdivided into fourteen parishes. Furthermore, Jamaica is the third largest in the Caribbean. Due to its size, the island’s geographical features are quite diverse. Not only does it feature a variety of landscapes, such as coastal plains, mountain ranges, caves, beaches, and more, it also includes different ecosystems, like rainforests, savanas, and dry areas. The island is also filled with a variety of wildlife, including some on the verge of extinction. Jamaica resides where the Gonave and Caribbean tectonic plates meet. Uplift, which results from these plates' continuous convergence, gives Jamaica its mountainous terrain and frequent earthquakes. Jamaica is 235 km (146 miles) long and varies from 22 to 51 km (35 to 82 miles) wide. Because of Jamaica’s geographic location, Jamaica’s tropical climate brings warmth all year round — with a general summer temperature average of 88 degrees fahrenheit (31 degrees celsius) and a general winter temperature average of 75 degrees fahrenheit (24 degrees celsius). The sea and northeast trade winds, which predominate all year long, have an impact on the tropical climate. Jamaica, known for its unique culture and breathtaking natural attractions, and other distinguishing features, continue to attract millions of tourists.
